SAWACO Water Desalination North Obhor Plant Overview

SAWACO adopted the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (S.W.R.O.) technology to desalinate seawater in order to produce high quality of potable water suitable for drinking, as well as for residential, commercial, and industrial uses.

The design output of the plant is 13,350 m³ / day.
  • There are two (2) skids or R.O. trains (2 X 2650 -SAWACO Phase I) that are in operation from December 2001
  • Two (2) skids or R.O. trains (2 X 1800-SAWACO Phase II) operating since April 2004
  • One  skid 1 x 1800 m3/day ( SAWACO Phase-III) entered operation in  April 2006
  • One skid 1 x 2650 m3/day (SAWACO Phase-IV)  started  operation since February 2008 .

For Specific applications 2 X 500 M3/day brackish  RO are available to further treat potable water to produce hi-purity water fit for specific industrial applications.
  • Each RO skids of Phase-I has (42) Pressure Vessels, while Phase-II and Phase –III skids each   has (25) Pressure Vessels. while Phase-IV Skid has (36) Pressure Vessels . Each pressure vessel contain 6 elements (membrane).
  • The pump chambers houses the three (3) Filter Feed Pumps and Backwash Pumps for Phase-I and another 3 sets of filter Feed pumps for Ph-2. While there are two (2) Filter Feed Pumps fOr Phase –III and Two (2) Filter Feed Pumps for Phase- IV.
  • The sea water intake is located in the perimeter of the plant using 14 Beach Wells drawing on average 43,200 m3/day. The feed water is drawn from the raw water tanks to feed the pumps. There a total of 10 FFP (Filter Feed Pumps).
  • In Ph-1, four (4) Vertical Multi Media Filters (MMF) containing sand and anthracite act as pre-treatment  while Phase-II, III and IV rely on two-stage cartridge micro filtration 20 micron and 5 micron for their pre-treatment.
  • Each RO stream has a High Pressure Pump  (HPP) that boost the pressure of the feed water. A Turbo Charger (ERT) energy recovery device on each stream further boosts the pressure. After the turbo charger, the high pressure feed
reaches the  membranes. Within the permeates the high pressure forces water through the thin composite film membranes by reverse osmosis and permeate is produced. The salt is left behind in the brine.
  • The permeate flows  to the water storage tanks in the plant area. Post Treatment of lime and chlorine ensure the product water quality.
  • The brine flows to the brine side of the Turbo charger and thereafter to the reject tank (adjacent to the pump chamber)from where it is pumped back to the sea (by gravity only).
  • Other systems in the plant are the flushing system, for flushing the membranes and the cleaning system, for cleaning and post treatment of the permeate.
  • Automatic control of the plant is by programmable logic controller (PLC) and by SCADA system.

SAWACO   CROP Water Desalination Plant
CROP means Corniche Reverse Osmosis Plant . It was commissioned in Sept 2007  to desalinate seawater in order to produce high quality of potable water suitable for drinking, as well as for residential, commercial, and industrial uses.

The design output of the plant is 4,500 m³ / day.
  • There are three (3) skids or R.O. trains (3 X 1,500 m3/day) that are in operation since September 2007 (Two Trains)  and March 2009 (One Train )
  • For Specific applications 1 X 600 M3/day brackish  RO is available to further treat potable water to produce hi-purity water fit for specific industrial applications.
  • Each RO skids in CROP has (18) Pressure Vessels,  each containing (7) membranes.
  • The pump chambers houses  six (6) Filter Feed Pumps , two for each skid.
  • The sea water intake is located in the perimeter of the plant using 5 Beach Wells drawing on average 14,400 m3/day. The feed water is drawn from the raw water tanks to feed the pumps.
  • For pre-treatment, CROP  relies  on two-stage cartridge micro filtration 20 micron and 5 micron for their pre-treatment.

  • Other systems in the plant are the flushing system, for flushing the membranes and the cleaning system, for cleaning and post treatment of the permeate.
  • Automatic control of the plant is by programmable logic controller (PLC) and by SCADA system.
